I've been running for 15 years.

I started riding my bicycle a lot in high school and felt running was a better fit for my interests. So, I switched to cross country after an 0-9 season with the football team because that sure wasn't any fun.

If I could no longer run I would fill the void with biking or skiing or skating. They're all the same to me. If I were no longer able to do anything, like if I became a quadriplegic, I'd use my brain more. I think I'd do more writing and reading.
My favorite run is the Literacy Council half marathon. There are trails and hills enough to keep things interesting which is important on a race that long. But it isn't so challenging that you're worried about turning an ankle or getting rocks in your shoes. Plus, they have real food at the end.
I like to run with boxer briefs on. They prevent chaffing on my chubby thighs. |

My greatest running accomplishment is a 15k I did with a finishing time of 1:19:26. That's 8:32 per mile. That's a long story. It was February 17, 2007 at the Rock Cut trail series. Race time temperature was about 18 degrees. There was a good 6 inches of snow on all the trails. Out of 137 finishers only 6 managed a pace better than 10 minutes per mile. The only opponent I was trying to out run was hypothermia. That wasn't easy with the way I was dressed. I wore my wrestling singlet over a pair of compression shorts and a thin, long sleeved shirt. Two pairs of knit gloves, an ear band and some long socks completed the outfit. I knew at the start that my best effort was the only thing that would keep me warm enough to finish. I was delighted to find out that it also kept me ahead of everyone else.

My next goal is to apply some sound training strategies to my running.
My advice to other runners needs to be taken with a grain of salt. There are many good books out there on running and I've only read two of them
I plan to run until it starts to hurt. Then when it stops hurting I'll start up again. That's what I've been doing for a while now with no injuries to mention. I owe my several consecutive years of injury free running to a healthy fear of falling down and a low pain tolerance. I'm hoping for many more. |
